I always found it fascinating that people are voluntarily getting on an erg. I mean, I do it too, but only if water is not practical , be it for time or daylight constraints (gym is halfway to the boathouse, so that saves more than an hour…) or weather. But I really dread the erg.
Probably a matter of perspective. Much better than a treadmill, but nothing compares to a boat. 🙂

Is there really no water near you?

There are fishing lakes near me, but rowing really isn’t a thing here. The closest rowing club is over an hour away. Heck I have never even rowed in a shell just found the erg and kind of got addicted. It’s a nice change up from riding the bike. I used to run a lot, but my body really doesn’t like that any more, lower leg injuries and such. Nice to meet you

    Hi fellow erg warriors.

Similar situation to Blackbeard here, it seems. Next rowing club rather far away and two young kids at home, so better to skip the time to the club, start some workout right away and be there if both kids ask for parental attention at the same time.

I expect the situation basically the same for the foreseeable future and therefore no rowing competition upcoming. So for now trying to maintain as much fitness as possible until I have more time on the water again. Did competitive rowing at uni more than a decade ago.

What are you mixing into your erg sessions to spice it up?

Aram‘s videos help me through the longer, low intensity sessions and sometimes I do the concept 2 workout of the day for intensity.

A biorower would be a nice upgrade, but a linear erg seems to require much less space. I am considering a smart bike trainer like a zwift for the low intensity sessions. At the same time, I am sceptical if I actually find the time for much longer sessions. Currently ca 100 km per winter months on the erg, plus 1 or 2 strength sessions per week with bodyweight, resistance bands, dumbbells and gymnastic rings.

Any ideas for partner workouts on the rowing machine to motivate others to join?

Looking forward to hearing your stories and/or recommendations!
